On March 13, 2018, CCRUN co-lead a special edition webinar with the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay (SRIJB) and the National Weather Service - New York City Weather Forecast Office. This weather roundtable discussion focused on a series of coastal storms (nor’easters) impacting New York City and Long Island. Early March 2018 saw consecutive nor’easters bring rain, snow, wind, and coastal flooding to the New York metropolitan area, with one actually occurring on the day of this event. On the webinar, the forecaster from the weather service discussed the meteorology of the coastal storm events and the conditions that lead to significant coastal flooding along New York City and Long Island’s coastal line. CCRUN researchers placed these storms into the context of historical events and projections for future flooding while also describing adaptation and resilience efforts in the region working to protect against future coastal storm and flood events.
